Nambo Paradise

After lunch, we continued to make our way down the Boso peninsula in Chiba to a botanical garden called Nambo Paradise. If you have any interest in flowers or plants this is an interesting stop to make if you happen to be near Tateyama, Chiba.

Nambo Paradise

Nambo Paradise contains over ten greenhouses and also has a small animal park on site. The 1st Hall (greenhouse) was the Entrance Hall containing rare flower bearing trees donated by Singapore Botanic Gardens.

The 2nd Hall was the Hibiscus Corner. It was fun to see these familiar flowers that are popular at home in Hawaii.

The 3rd Hall was the Ananas Corner with members of the pineapple family on display. The 4th Hall was Bougainvillea Corner, very colorful! And the 5th Hall was Ferns Corner, very reminiscent of the Big Island in Hawaii.

Below is the 6th Hall or Flower Hall which was maybe the most colorful greenhouse!

The 7th Hall was Tropical Fruits Corner, with more sights that reminded us of home…

Nambo Paradise Bananas

The 8th Hall was called Cactus Corner and reminded me of my dad since he really likes Arizona and some of the cactus species that grow in that area.

The 9th Hall was Tropical Blossoms Corner with plants that prefer high temperatures. And finally the 10th Hall was the Tropical Bird Aviary.

These birds below scared me – They were huge and at first I thought they were all one animal!

Nambo Paradise also has a Butterfly House where you can walk among many different species of butterflies passing you by.

The Great Greenhouse below is at the center of Nambo Paradise and has been made into a jungle with big tropical trees. From this area you can also see Mt. Fuji in the distance!

Our last stop before heading towards the animal area was the Singapore Orchid House. This house was built to commemorate the link between Singapore Botanic Gardens and Nambo Paradise.

Outside there were many types of animals to see just like a mini zoo. But what I thought was really neat was the duck/geese area.

I was so surprised that as far away from Hawaii that we were, there in front of us was our Hawaii state bird…the Nene Goose!

We’ve been to Nokogiriyama, lunch at The Fish, and now Nambo Paradise. But hold on, our Chiba day trip is not over yet!

Chirashi

For lunch after our trek around Nokogiriyama, we stopped at a nearby place called The Fish. It has a large restaurant with floor to ceiling windows right next to the water (Tokyo Bay). We were able to snag a table right by the windows so we had great views with lunch!

At the Fish, there is also an area between the parking lot and restaurant where you can buy all kinds of omiyage like tsukemono, wakame, manju, and of course fish. We bought some tsukemono and three boxes of a very delicious yaki manju.

For lunch I had the chirashi you see above. I loved the sprinkling of ikura all around! He had the tendon you see below. Both were good, very tasty!

Nokogiriyama

Here is the last post for the Nokogiriyama portion of our Chiba day trip. In the previous post I mentioned that there were many sites to see on the mountain, not just pretty views of Mount Fuji and the surrounding areas. Here is a map showing the sites and a few of my pics along the way…

At this window we purchased our tickets to get in to the area.

After a short walk we reached this first buddha that is carved into a very tall cliff face.

After this, if you aren’t afraid of heights you can hike to the top of the cliff – to a lookout that you hope and pray won’t fall off of the mountain…

After that we took a little detour making our way to Nokogiriyama’s famous daibutsu. This Buddha is said to be the tallest in all Japan, bigger than even the ones in Nara and Kamakura! It was impressive stone work to see and amazing that we got to enjoy the area without anyone else around!

When we were finished with our leisurely hike around Nokogiriyama, it was time for some lunch nearby!

Nokogiriyama

After reaching the top of the Nokogiriyama Ropeway, we were greeted with these fantastic views…

Nokogiriyama

My favorite view from the top of Nokogiriyama was this one below where you can see Mount Fuji in the distance!

If you look for the little marker on the map below, you can see the general area where Nokogiriyama is located.

Access to Nokogiriyama is pretty close for those in Tokyo or Chiba. And for those in the Kanagawa or Yokosuka area, the Tokyo Wan Ferry offers access across Tokyo Bay in about 40 minutes.

In addition to these views, Nokogiriyama is home to many other sites on the mountain. There is a stone buddha taller than both the Nara and Kamakura daibutsus. Also, there is another huge daibutsu that is carved into a tall cliff face.

On a cool clear day like this, Nokogiriyama is really a great place to visit!
